The Trouble Pilgrims – Pilgrimage

When you walk into one of the most iconic theatres in the world and you somehow feel at home, this is the feeling that I certainly got on arriving and preparing for my two nights playing guitar in a supporting role with the guys from The Radiators from Space ( minus Philip Chevron ), as The Trouble Pilgrims with Horslips on their Drive the Cold Winter Away shows at The Olympia Theatre Dublin.

Being back with the Spirits of the Rock’n’roll family and performing again on stage after 30 years only yards from my family’s first home on Essex Street and Flannery’s Bar in Dublin’s Temple Bar where my Da sang, drank and played on their darts team through the early 60’s, was a dream fulfilled.

From the get go the staff and all the Horslips crew at the Olympia were helpful and warm. Horslips as a band are true gentlemen and everything I believed about them turns out to be true, they are built well from the ground up as individual artists collectively coming together in the true Spirit of Celtic kindness.

Meeting with Barry Devlin again of whom I had worked with over 30 years ago in the advertising world, we also shared the same advertising agency start at Arks Advertising, where Barry, Eamon Carr, Charles O’Connor and Gerry Maher had met each other. I had the pleasure of the time to chat with Eamon Carr on the second night as we reminisced and shared our intertwined past.

Horslips set brought back many memories for me and congratulations to all the guys on delivering that unique and special sound that resonated right through their loyal and trusted fans on both nights.

The Trouble Pilgrims

The Trouble Pilgrims as a band have that breath-of-fresh-air about them in today’s bonkers music market, they kick true Rock’n’roll and great songwriting back onto centre stage with beautifully crafted songs such as 6:10 Special, Second Avenue, Million Dollar Heroes, Johnny Jukebox, Sunday World, Enemies, Television Screen and the lyrically amazing Kitty Ricketts, which was preformed with The Pilgrims by the superb Aphra O’Connor. The two nights for me working with The Trouble Pilgrims and Horslips are two nights I will cherish forever. The kindness and goodwill extended to me by them and their families and the tremendous support of good wishes from my family and friends I will never forget.

I have been to the Olympia a million times as a punter and witnessed some of the most memorable performances of my life there. I have always got a that warmest of smile and a wink from Maureen in Maureen’s Bar, but this time it’s different, she knows I am playing tonight and yes, I finally have that must have photo with her and a hug – Thanks Maureen as always for your loveliest of welcomes.

All that remains for me to say is a special thank you to Steve Rapid, Pete Holidai, Johnny Bonnie and Paddy Goodwin for sharing their experience together with me, and not forgetting the kindest regards to Philip Chevron whom everyone’s thoughts of good health, well being and happiness are extended to for the future.

The Trouble Pilgrims and Horslips The Olympia
Pete opened first night with “We are The Trouble Pilgrims and Yes, that’s Trouble with a Capital T” – we kicked the set out and it was over within what seemed like the blink of an eye, until I then found myself sharing the stage in a collective Christmas encore with The Pilgrims and Horslips with, Jim Lockhart, Barry Devlin, Johnny Fean, Charles O’Connor, Ray Fean, Pete Holidai, Johnny Bonnie, Steve Rapid, Paddy Goodwin and Aphra O’Connor giving it large with the Johnny Kidd & The Pirates song “Shakin’ All Over” – outstanding.
Thanks to all who made it possible.
And Da – this ones for you.
Thanks to everyone who sent the photographs.
